The Teacher Assistant programme — officially the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) under the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative — has been South Africa’s biggest youth jobs programme, placing around 200,000 unemployed young people in public schools as Education Assistants (EAs) and General School Assistants (GSAs) with a monthly stipend. Millions of young South Africans are watching for the next intake.

This guide gives you the honest current status, the full requirements, and the exact application process — so that the moment a new phase opens, you can apply within minutes while everyone else is still registering.

⚠️ Current status: read this before anything else

• Phase 5 ended on 30 November 2025, and the Department of Basic Education (DBE) confirmed there would be no extension.
• As of now, no new phase (Phase 6) has been officially opened. The 2026 national budget cut the BEEI allocation drastically, leaving no funded posts for a new intake yet, and government has described the programme’s future as uncertain.
• The DBE has issued an official scam alert about Facebook and WhatsApp posts claiming “Teacher Assistant Phase 6 2026 applications are open.” Those posts are fraudulent. The department confirmed there has been no official announcement and warned people not to share personal information or pay any fees to these advertisers.

So if you see “Phase 6 is open — apply here” anywhere other than the official channels below, it is a scam or clickbait. That said, the programme has come back before when funding was found, pressure to revive it is strong, and when an intake does open, the application window is typically only two to three weeks. The winners are the people who are ready.

The two positions explained

Education Assistant (EA)

EAs work inside the classroom supporting teachers: helping learners with reading and writing, preparing materials, supporting lessons in priority areas like Mathematics, reading and literacy, assisting with ICT, and helping with classroom management. Matric is required, and in past phases preference went to applicants with post-school qualifications or those studying towards teaching part-time.

General School Assistant (GSA)

GSAs support the school outside the classroom: maintenance and handyman work, sports and enrichment activities, cleaning, safety and general support. Matric is NOT required for GSA posts, which makes this the entry point for youth who didn’t finish school.

Both roles have run as roughly 6-month contracts with a stipend of about R4,000 per month in the most recent phase, working school hours Monday to Friday.

Who qualifies (based on Phase 5 criteria)

The next phase’s rules may differ, but past requirements have been consistent:

• South African citizen with a valid 13-digit ID
• Aged 18–34 (LSEN schools: 18–39)
• Unemployed and not in education or training (NEET) — not studying full-time
• Not receiving a SASSA grant, except the Child Support Grant on behalf of dependants
• Living close to the school you apply to — within about 5 km of an urban school or 30 km of a rural/farm school
• Clean record for working with children — a police clearance is required after shortlisting, and the Sexual Offences Register is checked; offences involving children, violence or dishonesty disqualify
• Matric for EA posts; no Matric needed for GSA posts

How the application works (when a phase opens)

There is only one application channel: SAYouth.mobi. Schools do not accept walk-in applications, there are no paper forms, and no other website, WhatsApp group or Google Form is legitimate.

Step 1: Register on SA Youth NOW — before any phase opens

Go to sayouth.mobi — it’s zero-rated, so it uses no data. Register with your ID number and cellphone number, and complete your profile to 100%: education, address and contact details all accurate. Your address matters because you can only apply to schools near where you live.

Do this today. Application windows are short, and a ready profile means you apply in 15 minutes on day one instead of fighting a crashing website on the deadline.

Step 2: Watch only the official channels

Announcements of a new phase come from:

• The Department of Basic Education’s verified Facebook page and website (education.gov.za)
• SA Youth’s verified platforms and your SA Youth dashboard
• Official government media statements

Ignore WhatsApp groups, Telegram bots and websites claiming a phase is open when these channels are silent.

Step 3: When applications open, log in and search

On your SA Youth dashboard, search for “Education Assistant”, “General School Assistant” or “Teacher Assistant”. Select a school within your allowed distance and submit. Apply early in the window — never on the last day.

Step 4: Save your reference number

After submitting you’ll receive an SMS with a reference number. Keep it — it’s your proof of application and you’ll need it for any follow-up.

Step 5: Respond fast if shortlisted

Schools contact shortlisted candidates for verification, police clearance and placement. Keep your phone on and answer unknown numbers during this period.

How to spot the scams (they are everywhere)

• Any fee = scam. DBE and SA Youth never charge to apply, register or “process” an application. Ever.
• Any application form on Google Forms, Telegram or WhatsApp = fake. The only application happens inside your SA Youth profile.
• “Phase 6 is open” posts while official channels are silent = fake, recycling old phase graphics to harvest your personal information.
• Never share your ID number, banking details or OTPs with anyone claiming to secure you a post.
